Pete’s informal resume

Here we are on the cover of Inc, really at the apogee of our renown. When we hit this little zenith we had already begun the process of selling the company. The article itself was a good one, it explains the learning-community idea. It came out in November of 2000, and you can read it on Inc.’s website here: Zen and the Art of the Self-Managing Company.

Obviously the best place to learn about the company itself is at the Great Harvest public site. The Company History page tells a concise story of how we started, grew, and eventually passed it along to its current owners. Additionally Great Harvest maintains an extensive internal intranet where bakery owners and company employees share news and collaborate on projects, but this isn’t open to the public.

In 2004 I was invited to submit a chapter for a book on Knowledge Management being edited by Madanmohan Rao. My article didn’t make it into the final book, but still I feel indebted to Madan for pushing me to write it. The timing was perfect since I had been away from the company long enough to gain perspective, but my memories were still fresh. I tried to do a good job writing it, and I like it. You can read Madan’s book chapter, here.

And if you’d like to browse books and articles written about the company and ourselves, here’s a plain-jane Word outline saved to html that has links and descriptions for ten of the best media articles, along with Amazon links to three good books.
